NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sen. Chris Murphy and Rep. Rosa DeLauro announced the award of a $10 million grant to construct a second platform at New Haven's State Street Train Station.

The United States Department of Transportation awarded around $474 million in Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grants to projects nationwide this year, which is the fifth round of grants since the program's inception in 2009.

Under the current track configurations at the State Street Station, the new trains planned for the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail line would need to cross two or three of the main Northeast Corridor tracks in order to reach the existing platform.

Creating the new platform will eliminate those crossings, which will minimize delays and congestion for the Northeast Corridor.
