MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) -

A 5-month-old girl was killed and an 11-month-old was critically injured when a vehicle they were in was hit by another car in Manchester on Thursday afternoon.

The tragic incident was reported just before 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Spencer Street and Hillstown Road.

According to police, preliminary information showed a 17-year-old was traveling north on Hillstown Road when it slammed into the other vehicle traveling on Spencer Street.

Witnesses said that it appeared as though the car that was hit was rushing through the intersection to make the light before it turned red.

After the crash witnesses said two people were able to crawl out from one of the mangled cars and began shouting that there were two children trapped inside.

Police said the children were properly seated in child safety seats prior to the crash.

"It's the two babies that I saw them take out of the car with the Jaws of Life," witness Merrill Kidd said.

Witnesses said that throughout the whole time rescue workers were trying to get the children out of the car, there was silence, and CPR was performed on at least one of the children when they were able to get them out.

The 5-month-old girl was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The 11-month-old remains in critical condition.

The woman driving the children was brought to a local hospital and the 17-year-old walked away without serious injury.

Anyone with any information about the crash is asked to call the Manchester Police Department at 860-645-5560.
