Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's chief of staff has asked the state's economic development commissioner to provide an update on what's being done to improve financial accountability of the replica schooner Amistad.
The Day of New London reports that chief of staff Mark Ojakian asked Catherine Smith, head of the Department of Economic and Community Development, to give him an update and action plan for accountability for grant funding.
State Rep. Diana Urban, D-North Stonington, has criticized what she says has been a lack of information about how Amistad America has spent nearly $8 million in state funding.
Amistad America lost its nonprofit status after failing to file federal tax returns for three years and the ship is in Maine where it is operated by a sail-training organization.
