JUPITER, FL (WFLX) - There are 18 cases of tuberculosis after an investigation at Jupiter Middle School of Technology. Students, faculty and family members were tested. The Palm Beach County Health Department did not break down which group tested positive.

In May, health officials say, they screened about 300 people for possible exposure of tuberculosis.

Two weeks ago, the Palm Beach County Health Department  re-tested 166 of the 300 people who were tested in May.

The results indicated 18 infections among those individuals tested, according to Tim O'Connor, spokesman for the Palm Beach Health Department.

TB is spread through the air from one person to another.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or sings. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

Symptoms of TB disease include a bad cough that lasts three weeks or longer, pain in the chest, coughing up blood or sputum, weakness or fatigue, weight loss, no appetite, chills, fever and night sweats.
