GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

Eight restaurants remained without service Wednesday evening after a "significant" water main break in Groton earlier in the day.

Groton police said the break was reported along Poquonnock Road around 9:30 a.m., and officials closed the road in the area of Route 1 as a result.

Detours are in place, police said, and Route 1 is expected to reopen Wednesday night. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

Detours are as follows:

  • Westbound: South Road to Runway Lane to High Rock Road to Poquonnock Road.
  • Eastbound: Buddington Road to Gold Star Highway to North Road.
  • Southbound: South Road to Tower Lane to High Rock Road onto Pequonnock Road back to Route 1
  • Northbound: Buddington Road to Gold Star Highway onto North Road and back to Route 1

Officials from Groton Utilities said customers may experience some discoloration and drops in water pressure while repairs are made.

"Because of the reverse of flow, changes in pressure customers will experience an aesthetic problem of discolored water," said Groton Public Utilities GM Rick Stevens. "The water is safe to drink."

While some utility crews repaired the problem, others canvassed commercial and residential customers testing the tap water. Tests revealed the water quality was safe.

Groton Public Utilities officials found that a 10-inch water main broke, which is connected to a 16-inch T pipe.
