A Greenwich woman is fighting for her life after police say she was bludgeoned with a baseball bat by her husband.
Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, police said they were called to a multi-million dollar home on Round Hill Road after getting word of some sort of dispute between a husband and wife.
When officers arrived, they found Michael Demaio, 55, outside of the home and his wife, Diane Demaio, badly beaten with a bat upstairs.
"He was approached without incident just outside the residence," said Greenwich police Lt Kraig Gray.
Diane Demaio was taken to an area hospital where she is in critical condition, police said.
The baseball bat used in the incident was located on the second floor of the residence, police said.
According to court documents, Diane Demaio filed for a legal separation on Sept. 5 in Stamford Superior Court.
The home on Round Hill Road is listed for sale. There was a pending sale back in July, but the home was put back on the market in August.
Michael Demaio was charged with attempted murder and assault and appeared in Stamford Superior Court on Wednesday.
In court, Michael Demaio's public defender said his client is dealing with severe financial issues.
Eyewitness News asked police about any prior issues at the Demaio's residence.
"At this point, I don't believe we've been there, but we're investigating all the circumstances that led to the incident," Gray said.
Police said the victim's mother was in the home when the attack happened, but she was not seriously hurt.
The couple has three adult children. Police said none of them were home at the time.
Greenwich police are also talking to area resources, who deal with domestic violence. Greenwich police Chief James Heavey said he would not talk directly about this case.
"The time when a victim can be made vulnerable is when in the stages of leaving a relationship," said Heavey, who was speaking in generalities. "So there are programs to make sure individuals or potential victims are safe."
Demaio is being held on $1 million bond.
