PD: Phoenix babysitter admits to choking 6-year-old

A Phoenix woman has been arrested after two young children she was babysitting were found to have severe bruises when their parents picked them up.

Shan Marie McDonald, 36, is facing two felony counts of child abuse and one count of aggravated assault.

According to the probable cause statement, a Valley mom dropped off her two children, ages 1 and 5, in McDonald's care about 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 2. When the mother came to pick up her children, she found her 1-year-old daughter lying on the couch by herself unable to open her eyes. Police said the mother found bruises on her neck, shoulders, face and thighs, and her lip was cut and swollen.

The baby was treated to Paradise Valley Hospital.

The 5-year-old was interviewed and she said she didn't know what happened to her 1-year-old sister but she saw McDonald choke a 6-year-old girl in her care because she couldn't find her shoes.

McDonald told police she had never struck a child in her care. She claimed she didn't know how the children were hurt and that she was at a doctor's appointment when the children were picked up, but her 17-year-old assistant babysitter said McDonald's appointment was in the morning and she was in her bedroom when one of the mothers arrived.

The mother of the 6-year-old girl said she had taken photos of her daughter's injuries, including marks on her throat and scratches on her forehead. The child told police her babysitter had beat her and squeezed her neck with her long fingernails. The young girl also told police she pretended to be asleep when she heard pillows slamming on top of the baby's head.

In a second interview with police, McDonald admitted to choking the 6-year-old girl "because she was angry," according to the police report. But McDonald maintained that she didn't know what happened to the 1-year-old.

She was arrested and booked into jail on Wednesday.
