SUFFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

A student at the Suffield Academy died Friday morning after he had trouble swimming and had to be pulled from the school's pool Wednesday afternoon.

Iheanyichukwu Anyanwu was swimming for a brief time around 3 p.m. when he "needed to be rescued," Suffield Academy Headmaster Charlie Cahn said.

School administrators administered CPR to Anyanwu, Cahn said. The paramedics were called and Anyanwu was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA, where he died Friday just before noon.

Anyanwu, who was a freshman, was swimming at the pool during a "supervised activity," Chan said and the Suffield Academy's athletic trainer was on the pool deck at the time of the incident.

Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said the cause and manner is pending further studies.

Cahn said the school community is "shock" and "devastated at the loss" of Anyanwu.

Cahn said Suffield Academy is investigating the incident to "try and fully understand what circumstances might have led or contributed to this event."
