Millstone considering ways to cool plant, possibly through towers

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The owners of Millstone Power Station are looking at the possibility of creating cool towers, which would become the largest structures in Connecticut if constructed.

Officials with Millstone are looking at new ways of using water from Long Island Sound to cool the power plant, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection.

One of the options is constructing 500-foot cooling towers.

The tallest building in the state, city place in Hartford, is 537 feet tall. So the cooling tower would be like essentially putting a skyscraper at Millstone.

The project would cost more than a billion dollars, according to DEEP officials.

More studies may have to be done before determining if cooling towers are necessary.
