Stamford's public safety director says the cause of a massive explosion that leveled a six-bedroom house has not been determined, but the propane tank that blew up the house has stopped burning.
Ted Jankowski said Thursday morning that the 500-gallon propane tank buried in the backyard extinguished itself shortly after midnight.
He says the investigation will likely take a few more days. There were no serious injuries in the Tuesday explosion.
The Advocate of Stamford reports that police and fire officials believe it may have been caused by a buildup in the basement of propane fumes that could have been set off by a spark.
No evidence of arson has been found, but officials say the property will be treated as a crime scene until criminal wrongdoing is ruled out.
