A concert at Quassy Amusement Park was stopped after several drug overdoses late Saturday night.
According to police, 1,200 people arrived for a concert put on by the New England-based Tight Crew at the park. The show was a large-scale electronic dance music event which started at 6 p.m.
Police said about 10:30 p.m., several people "dropped" from an apparent drug overdose. Police believe the drug is the new 2CP, a powerful hallucinogenic, which overheats the body and takes effect three to five hours after using it.
Officers working at the park began performing medical aid on four people and were later assisted by a nurse who was hired for the event. One male treated was breathless and didn't have a pulse and police performed CPR and used a defibrillator.
"They weren't acting right. The behavior was starting to get a little strange," said Richard Wildman, who is the acting police chief for Middlebury Police Department. "And that's when we had the first medical go down."
Several ambulances from the surrounding area rushed to the scene to assist. Police said seven people were treated and four were still in the hospital Sunday morning.
Police said at 10:39 p.m. the call went out for assistance, not for violence, but as a mass casualty event. About 30 officers answered the call from Naugatuck, Woodbury, Watertown, State Police Troop A and State Police Troop L.
Three K-9s were used to sweep the park to make sure a victim who may have overdosed didn't get overlooked.
Police arrested one man, Kyle Stoddard, for interfering with an officer.
Officials with Tight Crew told Eyewitness News there is drug use at these events. However, this type of activity goes on at plenty of other events and they can't prevent kids from taking things outside their scope.
Tight Crew officials said they Plan to offer a free concert in the future. Quassy officials said it won't be at the amusement park.
"We carefully scrutinized the history of the production firm and indications were the company had presented numerous similar events without incident," Quassy said in a statement Monday.
