Sierra Leone official suggests Amistad reparations

An official of the west African nation of Sierra Leone is calling on the Spanish government to pay reparations to his country and New Haven over the revolt of African slaves aboard the Amistad.

The New Haven Register reports that Alpha Kanu, a presidential spokesman, said New Haven and Sierra Leone should sue over the 1839 insurrection.

He spoke Friday in New Haven at an event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the local Amistad Committee that has worked to keep alive the story of the Africans who revolted against Spanish slave traders aboard the Amistad.

The U.S. government seized the ship and brought the Africans to New Haven to stand trial. The case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled the Africans should be allowed to return home.
