New Haven gala to recognize locals, raise funds

New Haven politicians, officials and residents are set to attend the Black and Hispanic Caucus gala to honor people for their contributions to the city.

The New Haven Register reports that Friday's event is the second time the caucus will hold a gala.

The event raised $30,000 last year. The money was used to support youth and elderly populations, including by funding scholarships and helping local senior centers.

Alderwoman Jeanette Morrison, the caucus treasurer, said the caucus plans on again using the money to make a difference for youth and seniors. Caucus member say the caucus is also open to other initiatives.

The honorees this year include former Superintendent of Schools Reginald Mayo, former Board of Aldermen President Tomas Reyes Sr. and the Connecticut Center for a New Economy.
