PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Three pit bulls involved in an attack that killed a 2 1/2-year-old boy and injured his babysitter were euthanized on Tuesday afternoon.
Melissa Gable Maricopa County Animal Care and Control quoted the babysitter saying she understood the severity of the issue, the unpredictable temperament of her dogs and agreed to give up ownership.
Gable said one of the dogs was not put down.
"This dog was the mother of the three other pit bulls and according to the owner, was not involved in the incident," Gable said. "That dog came to the shelter spayed and will obviously not have any more puppies."
The caregiver, Lara Czerniski, suffered lacerations to her legs and feet. The boy died at the hospital.
Czerniski tried to break up a fight that had broken out between three of her four dogs Sunday morning. She and the child got caught in the middle.
The 28-year-old babysitter was watching five children when the attack happened around 11:30 a.m. at her home in the area of Val Vista and Melrose.
The other children were not harmed. They included two 9-year-old boys and two girls, ages 6 and 7.
The dogs, two female and two male pit bull mixes, were immediately impounded.
Gable said there was no history of past complaints about the dogs, but there was no history of them being licensed in the county.
The remains of the three dogs will be sent to the state lab for rabies testing in lieu of waiting for the entire 10-day quarantine period. Results should be known by end of week.
