Prescott rec area closed by wildfire set to reopen

A temporary closure imposed when a wildfire ignited in the Prescott National Forest three months ago finally is being lifted.

The Granite Mountain Wilderness, Granite Basin Lake and trails in the Granite Mountain Recreation area all were scheduled to reopen to the public Thursday morning.

The only remaining closure will be a section of the Box Culvert Trail that goes under Irons Springs, from the junction of Trail 619 to Doce Pit Road.

Visitors are asked to stay on existing trails as soils are still sensitive and susceptible to further erosion.

The Doce Fire was Arizona's first major wildfire of the season.

The human-caused fire began June 18 and charred nearly 11 square miles of dense brush and timber in the Granite Mountain Wilderness about seven miles northwest of Prescott.
