The Enfield school community is mourning the loss of one of its young students after the child was hit by a motorcycle right around the corner from his home.
A sixth-grade student was riding his bike on Wednesday when police said he somehow crashed with a motorcycle.
Just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, the boy, who was identified by Enfield police as Nico Filippa, was riding his bike to a friend's house when he collided with a motorcycle on Broad Brook Road near the intersection of Salerno Drive.
Both the motorcycle rider, 28-year-old Brian Dolloff, and Filippa, who family members said was riding his older sister and cousins, were heading south on Broad Brook, also known as Route 191, when the crash occurred.
Simone Hyson lives on Broad Brook and said she heard the motorcycle, followed by sirens.
"I thought to myself, 'He's not going to make it through the night if he keeps driving like that.' Then I heard the sirens," she said.
Olivia Milbury last saw Filippa at a Super Bowl party.
"He was rapping some song faster than anyone I've ever met or heard," Milbury said. "Hard not to think about him at the next party, and he won't be there, hard to grasp your head around it."
To help students and staff deal with the loss, grief counselors will be on hand at JFK Middle School and Parkland Elementary School, where the boy graduated last summer.
"Principal knew him by his nickname," Schumann said. "He had a lot of friends, good kid, great to have in class."
Enfield's superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Schumann said there will also be extra substitute teachers at the school to help teachers who need to deal with the loss.
"A message went out over the phone to parents where we shared sad news with children and a letter came home explaining his passing, and resources and phone numbers they could call if they need assistance out of the school session as well," Schumann said.
Dolloff was released from the hospital Friday, but did not want to comment to Eyewitness News.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Enfield Police Department.
"We're in the early stages, way too early to make a statement," said Enfield Police Chief Carl Sferrazza.
This isn't the first time a fatal crash has been reported along Broad Brook Road. Neighbors on the street said it's not uncommon for people to go faster than the posted speed limit. Within the past six to eight months, state officials have looked into re-engineering the road to try and stop the speeding and crashes.
The family told Eyewitness News they are hoping donations may be made on behalf of Filippa to the pediatric intensive care unit at Connecticut Children's Medical Center.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call 860-763-64000 ext. 1322.
