Franklin police are investigating an elaborate burglary at the T.J. Maxx store at Cool Springs. Police say the thieves made entry through the roof and stole money from a safe before leaving undetected.
The break-in occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.
Employees arriving for work Monday found cash missing from an office inside the store, located at 545 Cool Springs Blvd., and called police.
Investigators believe the culprits accessed the store from the roof and were able to dodge the store's security systems.
The crime was so intricate, detectives spent about five hours at the scene Monday examining evidence.
"This is one of those burglaries where, when you hear about it, it leaves you scratching your head in a way that you can't believe someone actually went through the trouble they did to gain access to a business for a burglary like this," said Franklin police spokesman Lt. Charles Warner. "It is very unusual."
It was the type of burglary you might expect at a jewelry store or a bank. No merchandise was taken - just cash - and while police are not saying exactly how the thieves cut through the roof - they say it was like something from a 'Mission Impossible' movie.
The amount of cash stolen has not been disclosed.
