An East Haven police officer has testified in a federal civil rights trial he heard a Hispanic man being assaulted while in custody.
The New Haven Register reports that Sgt. Anthony Rybaruk said Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford that he heard a thump as Xavier Criollo's chest or head hit a wall on the night of Jan. 21, 2009.
Jose Luis Alberracin, one of four men arrested, has testified that Officer Jason Zullo repeatedly shoved Criollo into a concrete wall.
Rybaruk said he did not see what happened, but that Criollo was on the ground and Zullo was shouting at him to get up.
Zullo has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice.
Dennis Spaulding and David Cari have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy against rights and other offenses.
