Suspects sought after Gallatin driveway paving scam

GALLATIN, TN (WSMV) -
Gallatin police are warning the public about a scam that has left an elderly man an unwitting victim.
At 79 years old, Dewey Moore should be able to enjoy retirement, but now he can't after a run-in with four men who damaged his driveway.
Moore told police the four men offered last week to seal his driveway for $67 per foot. When he said he didn't have that kind of money, they allegedly said they would do all of it for $67 total.
His vision fails him sometimes, so Moore signed a blank check.
That was a huge mistake, because someone then wrote the check for $5,000.
"I don't have no time for somebody like that. No time at all," Moore said.
To make matters worse, the workers used asphalt sealant on Moore's concrete driveway, essentially ruining the whole thing.
"Mr. Moore is 79 years old, and these fast-talking young people took advantage of him," said Gallatin police Officer Bill Storment. "He's had an estimate of $5,000 to dig up and fix the driveway."
When Moore realized the problem, he called his daughter, who stopped the check immediately so her father did not lose his money.
But it seems he did lose something even more valuable.
"To me, the big picture is not the driveway. It's that they've stripped his dignity. When your 79-year-old father cries to you every day, to me that's more cruel than the physical damage they did to his driveway," said daughter Penny Tucker.
Moore used to be a police officer. And his daughter noted the irony, saying that proves this kind of thing can happen to anyone.
Police want to find these four guys quickly, in part to keep other people from falling victim.
They could be in a yellow pickup with a black stripe and black writing on the side.
One of the men identified himself as "Steve Jones," but police don't know for sure whether that name is real or fake.
The men could face fraud and vandalism charges. So, if you see the truck or know who the guys are, call Gallatin police.
