Boy, 15, pleads not guilty in shooting death of MCSO detention officer

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting to death a detention officer for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges on Wednesday.

Leonard Culling Moreno entered his plea in Maricopa County Superior Court and will next be in court at 8:15 a.m. Nov. 7.

Moreno is accused of gunning down Jorge Vargas while Vargas worked on a truck in his driveway in the early morning hours of Aug. 8.

He also pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault in the shooting of a 19-year-old man two days later at a party and not guilty to a felony charge involving a drive-by shooting the same day.
