Yale University's new president said the pursuit of the American dream is a central part of higher education.
Peter Salovey was installed 23rd president of the Ivy League school on Sunday. The New Haven Register reports that he was joined by recent Nobel Prize winner James Rothman, poet Elizabeth Alexander, political analyst David Gergen, writer Calvin Trillin and Salovey's predecessor, Richard Levin.
Salovey says some in public office have forgotten what he calls the indispensable role of higher education in the pursuit of the American dream.
And he said others overlook how discoveries from university research promote economic growth.
The 55-year-old Salovey is a psychologist who joined the Yale faculty in 1986. He's been dean of the graduate school, dean of Yale College and Yale provost.
