FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A late-night of drinking turned deadly for a Florence man, who died from a gunshot wound to the chest while handling a gun Friday.

Robert DeArman III, 27, and three friends started drinking about 6 p.m. in the 10200 block of State Route 79 in Florence, according to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

They continued drinking into the night and one of the friends took a Springfield Armory .40-caliber handgun from a backpack to show it to the others around 11:20 p.m., the spokesman said.

DeArman took the gun, but as he handed it back to its owner, the gun discharged, striking DeArman, the spokesman said.

His friends immediately called 911 and performed CPR, but DeArman was dead by the time deputies arrived, the spokesman said.

The investigation was continuing, the spokesman said.
