GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
Glendale police say they've arrested a man who allegedly shot and injured a uniformed security guard who tried to stop him from stealing beer.
Glendale detectives got a tip and through their investigation got a search warrant for Monte Henry Alvarez, 31, of Phoenix.
The Glendale Police SWAT team executed the warrant on Dec. 9 in the 6100 block of West Osborne Road in Phoenix, where Alvarez was arrested and booked into Maricopa County Sheriff's Department jail on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Circle K on the corner of Camelback Road and 58th Avenue.
Police said at some point during a struggle, the suspect pulled a gun and fired several rounds - hitting the security guard at least once. A second security guard had rushed in to help his partner during the struggle.
"It's so senseless and sad that you go from a selfish misdemeanor situation to a felony situation that endangers not only the victim but everybody else in the surrounding area," said Lt. Earl Montgomery.
The guard was struck several times in his bulletproof vest. One of the bullets missed the vest and hit the guard. The guard then used his stun gun to try to stop the suspect. At that point, the gunman produced a knife and further wounded the guard, police said.
As the suspect fled, he physically assaulted the plain-clothed security guard.
