A motorcyclist is dead after police said he accelerated to beat a red light at a Phoenix intersection Tuesday night.
The 18-year-old victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The motorcyclist was heading west in the center lane on Union Hills Drive, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.
At the same time, a car driven by a 56-year-old woman was at the intersection of Union Hills and 19th Avenue waiting to turn north on 19th Avenue.
As the green traffic signal turned to yellow, witnesses said the victim sped up just as the car turned left into his path.
The driver of the car remained at the scene.
Detectives are on the scene. As of about 8:25 p.m., the intersection was closed in all directions and won't reopen for the next few hours, police said.
