President Obama said he appreciated the agreement.
Representatives flocked to the floor.
MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Hundreds of thousands of government workers are back to work after being without a paycheck for two weeks.
Congress passed a budget and avoided the debt ceiling which threatened to throw the economy into a tailspin late Wednesday evening.
President Barack Obama signed the measure early Thursday morning.
Under this deal, the United States government will remain funded through January 18th. Credit has been extended to February 7th.
However, this deal did not come without any fireworks on the House floor.
"This is not one nation under God," stated long-time stenographer Dianne Reidy.
Reidy was removed from the chamber by security before being placed into an elevator.
Her rant mentioned God, the Freemasons, and the Constitution.
Capitol police have not yet stated whether they will file charges against her.
While this is great news for the people who can go back to work, it is also welcome news for the people who need their help.
Here in the Mid-South, three West Tennessee representatives had the opportunity to vote to end the shutdown. Out of the three, only Congressman Steve Cohen voted in favor of ending the shutdown. Both Republican Representatives, Marsha Blackburn and Stephen Fincher, voted against the measure.
Cohen is thrilled the government can now move pass this partisan gridlock.
"I'm relieved," stated Cohen.
Cohen explained services like the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Women, Infants, and Children program, the Internal Revenue Service, the US Department of Veteran Affairs should be immediately restored. The national parks will also reopen.
