Volunteers work to check 1M bulbs at Holiday Light Fantasia

Even though we're in the middle of October, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas now that volunteers have started to change Hartford's Goodwin Park into a winter wonderland.

Those volunteers were busy making sure that when it comes time to flip the switch, the Holiday Light Fantasia will shine bright.

Thy Le said she's never been to the Holiday Light Fantasia, but this year she might. After all, she'll be able to see all her hard work pay off.

"It's good," she said. "I like helping out. It's good for us to get out of the office.

Le and about 50 of her co-workers at United Healthcare spent the day at the park volunteering. And before the largest Christmas display in the state comes to life, the Channel 3 Kids Camp needs to make sure every bulb is ready to burn bright.

In all, there's more than 1 million bulbs spread out over two miles inside Goodwin Park.

"Because of the damage that occurred from weather year to year, from storage year to year, it takes a long time to replace those bulbs and make sure the displays are up and beautiful, and everyone who comes through gets their money worth," Joan Gurski, of the Channel 3 Kids Camp said.

The camp started to replace the bulbs four weeks ago, but it's a long process. So the fact that they have the volunteers here to do the work makes a huge difference.

"Having large groups of volunteers, we can get so much done in a day which would typically take our small work crew a full week to get done, so it really helps us get ready for the event," Gurski said.

Thursday it was United Healthcare. Next week the volunteers will come from Travelers and later UPS.

The lights, which will run every night from Nov. 23 to Jan. 6 is the camp's biggest money maker, bringing in more than $300,000.
