The New Haven Police Department is investigating a rash of car tire thefts in the East Rock section of the city.
At least two car owners walked out to their cars Thursday morning to find the vehicles teetering on big rocks with all of the tires gone.
Police said there have been at least eight cases where all four tires were stolen at once in the past couple of weeks.
Catherine McGuinness found her car missing all four tries and was at a loss for words Thursday morning.
"Four is a full set," McGuinness said shrugging her shoulders.
Not even a block away, another Honda minivan was found with all four tires gone and on a rock, which caused even more damage.
Police said they believe the thieves bring a jack and raise it up on one side. Then the suspects put a rock under it and then go around to the other side to resume the same process.
It leaves heavy cars balancing on the side of the road and the tow can be tricky. The tow truck operator suggested people have two sets of locking lug nuts, which severely slows down thieves, so they may not touch their tires.
Investigators said these tire thefts are new, especially in the East Rock section of the city.
"I wasn't expecting this in East Rock," McGuinness said.
