Vigil to be held in honor of dog who died from abuse

CANTON, CT (WFSB) -

A pit bull mix puppy named Kiya was abused so badly that the dog had to be euthanized. The case of animal abuse made headlines last month in Boston and now, a vigil is being held in Connecticut to remember the animal.

Police are asking for the public's help finding the person who abused the dog.

Police said Kiya, the pit bull mix puppy, was starving to death on a playground in Qunicy, MA and was too far gone to survive.

The ripple effects of Kiya's story stretched far and wide including in Canton, CT, where a vigil will be held this Sunday to remember Kiya.

Deanna Damon said she is hoping the Canton Green will be filled with people and candles, for a dog that didn't stand a chance.

"It's going to be an animal abuse awareness and prevention event," Damon said.

The event will feature speakers who will educate the public on how to prevent and report animal abuse.

"A lot of people don't know how to report it," Damon said. "They're afraid to. They're afraid of the repercussions to be involved with this."

The event will feature a candlelight vigil at the end in honor of Kiya. Every attendee will receive a complementary doggie bag and a guide called Kiya's guide for animal abuse and prevention handbook.

"It's just my way of giving back. I'm very fortunate and blessed in my own business," Damon said. "And it allows me to do other things and give back in my community and to help people and their pets."

The event will be held on the Canton Green from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
