Family dealing with illness loses home in fire

Posted: Updated:

A young couple dealing with the illness of both their daughters is now struggling after a fire destroyed most of their belongings.

Philip and Nicole Corbesato and their daughters, 11-month-old Ava and 2-year-old Isabella lost their home in Shelton to a dryer fire over the weekend. Adding to their difficulties from the fire is the fact that their daughters, both filled with playfulness and curiosity, only have half of a heart.

"Essentially they're born with half a heart.  She's been through three of the procedures and Ava's been through two," Nicole Corbesato told Eyewitness News Tuesday night.

It's been a tougher year for Ava and Isabella's parents.  Not only did they have to watch their daughters go through grueling surgery, Nicole Corbesato had to leave her job and they had to downsize their home.

They just renewed their lease on a Shelton condo when a fire broke out on Sunday. Flames started coming out of the dryer, and Nicole Corbesato grabbed her kids and ran out.

"Within a matter of minutes, the whole area of the second floor went up in flames," Philip Corbesato said.

And with it went everything that the family of four had owned. They unfortunately did not have renter's insurance. "Well we lost everything so you have to start over," Philip Corbesato said.

Despite it all, they've showed remarkable strength.  They first have each other; and then comes a wealth of family and friends.  An online fund was set up in their name and donations have been overflowing.

"We're overwhelmed with gratefulness," Nicole Corbesato said. "Good people are out there and willing to help."

The family is staying with Nicole Corbesato's parents for now but are looking of course for a place of their own. They're meeting with the condo landlord Wednesday to see if they can work anything out.
