MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A state trooper walked right into a robbery in progress at a Milford gas station early Wednesday morning and used his gun on the armed suspect.

The suspect is dead after being shot by the trooper and now, the Connecticut State Police are investigating the deadly trooper-involved shooting.

State police said a trooper in his unmarked police car was conducting a routine check of the area around 3:15 a.m. when he entered the Patriot Fuel gas station at 719 Boston Post Rd.

Sources told Eyewitness News the trooper was in the restroom and walked out while the robbery was in progress.

State police said the trooper ordered the unidentified suspect to drop his weapon, which sources said was some sort of knife or sword.

State police were not saying what the weapon or whether there were multiple weapons, saying simply that the suspect was armed and would not listen to the trooper.

When he failed to comply, the trooper was forced to open fire and hit the suspect, killing him, state police said.

The unidentified trooper suffered minor injuries, but was taken to a local hospital to be checked out. The clerk inside the store was not injured, state police said.

Across the street, a business owner was hoping her surveillance cameras caught something.

"The camera wasn't positioned right over there, so [the camera] didn't see anything," said Milford business owner Diane Domin.

Officials said troopers and other investigators were at the scene on Wednesday and conducted a thorough investigation.

In addition to the gas station, troopers also investigated the Shoreline Motel next door, and a car was towed from the scene.

It's unknown if that vehicle belonged to the suspect.

The owner of gas station told Eyewitness News that the clerk is OK and is happy to have his store back open. He would not comment any further on the incident.

Late Wednesday morning, police from West Haven said they have been investigating three recent robberies and are looking into whether or not the suspect was responsible for those incidents.
