A conflict between Fairfield's Democratic and Republican registrars of voters has moved beyond politics and is instead the subject of allegations of violence.
Democratic Registrar Matthew Waggner has pressed criminal charges against Republican Registrar Roger Autuori, accusing him of slapping him. The Connecticut Post reports that Waggner accused Autuori of intimidation and harassment.
The newspaper said Autuori did not return calls for comment.
Waggner told police that as he was putting voting machine scanners into a bin last Friday Autuori became enraged because he believed Waggner was doing it improperly. Waggner accused him of grabbing him about the neck and yelling.
Police say Autuori said he pushed Waggner's shoulders, but his hands may have been closer to his neck.
Autuori was charged with breach of peace, a misdemeanor. He's due in court Oct. 28.
