FINDLAY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Purple ribbons are going up all over Findlay in honor of Vera Jo Reigle, who was murdered two years ago.
Two people are behind bars for the murder, but the case is causing controversy around town.
The group 'Voices for Vera' is behind the ribbons. They're protesting daily outside the Hancock County Courthouse, pleading with the prosecutor's office to re-open the case.
"She had multiple stab wounds; she had bite marks on her. Every bone in her body was practically broke," said Jamie Bracey of Voices for Vera.
Prosecutor Mark Miller says there's no need to re-open it. Bracey disagrees.
"Yes, the murderers are behind bars, but not all of them involved [are] behind bars," Bracey said.
Voices for Vera had been planning to take part in Findlay's upcoming Halloween Parade sponsored by the Hancock County Leadership Alumni Association. They planned to dress in purple, Reigle's favorite color, and hand out candy and fliers to raise awareness about abuse.
But the alumni association pulled the plug on their involvement.
"I don't understand why we can't stand up for something that happened to not just Vera Jo, but a lot of people," said Amber Greer. "Abuse is a common thing and I feel more should be done."
The alumni association released a statement saying: "Our highest priority as the organizers of the parade is to do our best to ensure the safety and security of all the participants and spectators, including the group in question. Therefore, the group in question will be refunded their entry and not be participating in the parade."
"I believe they're trying to keep it silent because they don't want to start up more problems," Greer said.
Despite the snub, Voices for Vera will be at the parade, just not to march in it.
