Bristol voters to decide on term limits proposal

Bristol voters are being asked to decide if most of the city's elected offices will be restricted by term limits.

The Bristol Press reports that a proposal is on the Nov. 5 ballot that would limit the mayor, city councilors and board of education members to eight consecutive years.

The measure, opposed by both mayoral candidates, would allow someone to give up an office for a term and seek re-election for up to eight more years.

The term limits proposal had passed the council 4-3, sending it to voters. Supporters say term limits would help elect new candidates with new ideas.

Republican mayoral candidate Ken Cockayne said term limits would force out experienced office-holders.

Democrat Chris Wilson says term limits would upset checks and balances established by experienced and well-informed officials.
