NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

The New Haven Police Department is investigating the 17th homicide of the year after a shooting Monday night in the Elm City.

Officers were called to the city's Westville Manor Public Housing on Wayfarer Street around 6:45 p.m. after shots were fired.

Deran Maebery, 21, of New Haven, was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. Maebery was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Officers have not located the weapon used in shooting at this time.

The motive for the shooting has not been established. However, police are investigating an argument that occurred earlier in the evening.

Police had originally arrested a suspect and charged him with murder, however after further investigation he was released after determining the information that led to the person being a suspect was not credible.

Anyone with information is asked to call the New Haven Police Department's Major Crimes Unit at 203-946-6304. All calls will remain anonymous.
