QUINCY, MA (AP) -

A man accused of torturing and beating a dog that was euthanized after being found barely alive in Quincy this summer has been ordered held on $500,000 cash bail.

Radoslaw Czerkawski, a 32-year-old Polish man living in Massachusetts, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Quincy District Court to 11 counts of animal cruelty and one of misleading police.

The female dog, nicknamed "Puppy Doe," was a pit bull type breed about a year old. Police said the dog had been starved and had severe injuries including a fractured skull, stab wounds and a split tongue.

The case has prompted calls for tougher penalties in Massachusetts for animal abuse.

About two dozen people came to the courthouse Tuesday to show support for the abused dog. Several stood outside the building with their own dogs.
