PD: Man threatens children on Guilford town green

Posted: Updated:

A Madison man is accused of threatening and making gestures that appeared like he was pointing a firearm at school-aged children on the Guilford Town Green Wednesday evening.

Officers were called to a report of a man "screaming, yelling, threatening and chasing children" at the Guilford Town Green around 5:45 p.m.

Brendan Garvey, 50, was located by police a short time later.

Witnesses told police that Garvey "inferred he had a gun and made gestures to mimic loading and pointing a pistol."

According to police, Garvey told the children, who had been dismissed early from school, that "there was possibly a bomb in his backpack."

No weapons or explosives were found in Garvey's possession. Police determined that Garvey was using a cell phone and silver pen type tire gauge to mimic a gun barrel.

Following his arrest, Garvey was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for an evaluation, police said.

Garvey was charged with breach of peace, risk of injury to minor and first-degree threatening. He is expected to be arraigned at New Haven Superior Court on Nov. 12.
