Hamden man dies after crash on I-395 in Waterford

Posted: Updated:

A 24-year-old man died in a two-car crash on Interstate 395 in Waterford early Thursday morning.

A tractor-trailer owned by U.S. Food Inc. was traveling on I-395 southbound near Exit 78 around 2:30 a.m.

A 1994 GMC C1500 pickup truck being driven by Joseph Civitelli of Hamden was traveling on the northbound side of I-395 when the vehicle drifted into the center median, police said.

The pickup truck, police said, slammed into the guardrail and flipped over into the path of the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Arquimedes Virella, tried to "swerve" out of the way of the pickup truck, but it slammed into the vehicle, police said.

The tractor-trailer then crashed into the metal guardrail, police said.

The impact from the crash sent the pickup truck into center median and caused Civitelli to be ejected from the vehicle.

Civitelli was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital where he died a short time later.

Virella was not seriously injured in the crash, police said.

The crash remains under Connecticut State Police.
