Van crashes into convenience store

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A convenience store was severely damaged after a minivan drove into it early Friday morning, police said.

The crash was reported just before 12:30 a.m. at the Sam's Mart on New Britain Avenue. Police said there were about 12 people with many of them in Halloween costumes inside the store when the crash occurred.

"There was stuff everywhere," said eyewitness Mikki Simons, who was inside with her boyfriend when the crash happened.

When the van comes in the store, it knocks down a man trying to leave the store. Another man grabs the woman, who was driving out the van, out of the vehicle.

The unidentified woman then walks out of the store. Customers were in shock when the woman got into a fight outside the store with the man, who is believed to be her husband,  and then slaps him right across the face.

"They were both drinking and you could tell she had been drinking because she almost crashed into several parked cars," Simmons said about the woman driving the van.

There were no reported injuries.

On Friday afternoon, crews were fixing the door of the store and replacing the glass.

The store manager, Mohammed Iqbal, said he believes a soda cooler was heavy enough to stop the driver from going further into the store.

"God helped me. Nobody was hurt, so happy," Iqbal said. "Whatever happens, we are alive and we will be alright."

Police told Eyewitness News they did not give the woman a breathalyzer test and said she did not have a license with her or proper insurance. She was arrested and given a ticket for causing the crash.
