HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Strong winds and severe thunderstorms pushed their way into Connecticut Friday morning prompting the National Weather Service to issue severe thunderstorm warnings.

The Channel 3 Early Warning Weather Center monitored the storms' advancement, and Meteorologist Mark Dixon said residents in areas where severe thunderstorm warnings were issued received strong, gusty winds and torrential downpours.

In Avon, Route 177 was closed between Chevas Road and Country Club Road after trees fell into utility wires. The same incident was reported on Route 8 in Colebrook. In that town a tree fell onto wires and closed the road north of Route 20.

Power outages were reported. According to Connecticut Light & Power, nearly 8,200 customers were without power at one point, most of which are in the Colebrook area. As of 3 p.m., there are 952 CL&P customers without power.

The CL&P website showed 54 percent of the town was in the dark. Nearly 50 percent of Clinton customers were also without power.
