UConn is expanding its unusual puppet arts program

The University of Connecticut is expanding one of its more unusual academic offerings - the puppet arts program.

UConn and West Virginia University are the only U.S. schools that offer degrees in puppetry. UConn is the only school to offer a master's degree in puppet arts.

The program recently hired a second full-time faculty member, renowned puppeteer Margarita Blush. She will assist program director Bart Roccoberton Jr.

As part of its effort to showcase its puppetry offerings, UConn is moving its Ballard Puppetry Institute and Museum to the new Storrs Center development downtown.

The museum features more than 2,000 puppets from around the world. It's currently located in the remote Depot campus on Route 44, several miles from the main campus.
