According to Fair Bluff Mayor Randy Britt, Mike Hammond complained of feeling ill at the polls and died on the way to the hospital Tuesday. According to Fair Bluff Mayor Randy Britt, Mike Hammond complained of feeling ill at the polls and died on the way to the hospital Tuesday.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man running for town council in Fair Bluff died of a heart attack on Election Day.

According to Fair Bluff Mayor Randy Britt, Mike Hammond complained of feeling ill at the polls and died on the way to the hospital Tuesday.

Hammond was running against three others for a place on town council.

No other details about his death are known at this time. Check back for more information as it becomes available. 

Hammond's brother, Billy, ran for mayor and won.

House lawmakers voted 77-38 Thursday afternoon to give final approval to the $23 billion spending plan that supporters say contains middle-class tax cuts, nearly ten percent teacher raises on average over two years, and money for Hurricane Matthew relief and reserves.
