PD: AZ man, 40, confesses to killing grandmother over curfew, rent
GOODYEAR, AZ (CBS5) -
Newly released court documents show a Goodyear woman was allegedly killed by her grandson because he was upset over his curfew and the amount of rent she was charging.
Jason Howell, 40, is facing charges of first-degree murder and concealing a dead body.
Detectives said Howell confessed to the murder and gave some horrific details on what happened.
According to the court documents, police responded to 78-year-old Helen Jean Lee's Goodyear home on Oct. 30 for a welfare check.
When they arrived, they found a badly damaged garage and inside the home they found blood splattered and signs that someone tried to clean up the blood.
Police spoke with a relative who said they have spoken with Howell who told them he was upset his grandmother had damaged the garage door and that he had smashed her head and slashed her throat.
Police later learned that Howell had been arrested in Chandler in a different incident.
Authorities began to question him and he confessed to the officers that he murdered his grandmother over the curfew and rent. Howell reportedly killed her by hitting her several times in the head with a shovel before slitting her throat.
Howell allegedly admitted to police he tried to clean up the blood before taking her body into the desert which is where detectives found her decomposed body.
Court documents also revealed that Howell attempted to kill her before. He claimed he was unsuccessful because she woke up before he was able to attack her.
