Two Rutherford County business owners were arrested on charges of sales tax evasion and theft on Thursday.
Authorities arrested 35-year-old Muuad Abdo Nasser, owner of Tony's Market and Jimmy's Tobacco in La Vergne, and 37-year-old Shirishkumar Hira, the managing member of Comfort Suites in Smyrna.
Nasser was indicted by a grand jury on one felony count of sales tax evasion and one felony count of theft of property over $10,000. Bond has been set at $20,000.
Investigators say Nasser is accused of willfully trying to evade $47,966.58 in sales tax from October 2011 to September 2012.
Hira was indicted by a grand jury on one felony count of sales tax evasion and one felony count of theft of property over $60,000. Bond has been set at $50,000.
Investigators claim Hira did not file sales tax returns from August 2009 to August 2012 and owes the state $185,738.25 in tax revenue.
