BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -
A Bridgeport woman is accused of beating her own poodle-mix puppy named Dora, so severely the dog died.
A dog was barking at a home of 23-year-old Rommy Rodriguez on Pacific Street. Sandra Contreras, who is the next-door neighbor, said she and the building's landlord heard Rodriguez yelling as the dog was "crying and whining."
"You could hear all the noise, all the yelling, screaming, whining and all the bang," said Contreras of Bridgeport. "And when I heard that I was like that's it."
The dog's barking kept getting "quieter and quieter until it stopped," witnesses told police.
Witnesses told police that Rodriguez and another man were seen holding a black garbage bag behind the building.
When Contreras went to look in that area, she said she noticed a freshly dug area and that's when she took matters into her own hands.
"It was actually the landlord that I made him do that," Contreras said. "But he dug up the dirt and he found a white bag with the dog inside."
That neighbor found the dog buried in a backyard, police said. The body of the animal was brought to the Bridgeport Animal Shelter.
A necropsy was performed on the body and it was determined it died from blunt force trauma.
Rodriguez, who has been previously arrested for breach of peace and criminal trespass, was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with animal cruelty charges.
Rodriguez was arraigned at Bridgeport Superior Court on Thursday where her attorney told the judge that she is getting psychiatric treatment.
After her court appearance, Rodriguez told Eyewitness News that her landlord hit and killed the poodle-mix, not her. However, Rodriguez would not comment any further.
"I wished I would have been there long before she was dead," Contreras said.
Rodriguez was released on the condition that she would appear back in court on Dec. 5.
