Employees told Eyewitness News that they were placed in a lockdown after a report of a suspicious substance inside a state office building in Hartford Monday afternoon.
Around 3 p.m., emergency crews were called to an office building at 165 Capitol Ave. where the Connecticut Department of Education, Department of Public Works, Department of Consumer Protection and Department of Administrative Services are housed.
A state of Connecticut employee said she was opening mail when she thought a powder, which was white in color, fell out, Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection officials said. The woman stopped opening the letter, according to DEEP.
The ventilation to the building was shut off and the authorities were notified.
When emergency personnel arrived, authorities checked the letter and nothing was located, DEEP said.
There was no threat to public safety and no further action was taken, DEEP officials said.
Employees were kept inside and no one was allowed to enter the building for about 30 minutes. No evacuations were ordered.
People were allowed to enter the building around 3:30 p.m.
