A Stonington High School graduate who died last year has established an $863,000 scholarship fund for students at his alma mater.
The Day of New London reports that the Thomas J. Ellis Scholarship Award will be administered by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. It's expected to generate about $38,000 a year in scholarships for Stonington High School students who need financial help for college.
Rick Schwartz, a consultant for the community foundation, says the high school did not know Ellis and was surprised at the gift.
Ellis, who graduated the high school in 1933, worked at the former Sonoco Products Co. in Mystic and held supervisory jobs at the Naval Submarine Base. He retired in 1971 and lived in Groton.
The first Ellis scholarships are to be announced in June.
