PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix police said the shooting of a man found Wednesday morning in a car with a bullet hole is a mystery.

The man was in surgery for his wounds at a Phoenix hospital and in critical condition, said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.

Officers found the man in a Mercedes sedan near 27th and Northern avenues shortly before 5 a.m. The car had crashed through a fence near Mission Drive Baptist Church.

Holmes said bullet casings were found on the ground nearby.

He said officers were trying to determine where the shooting happened and who was involved.

No other information was immediately available.
