Ombudsman: AZ Medical Board issues a wake-up call

PHOENIX (AP) -

The head of an independent state investigative agency says problems his agency found at the Arizona board that licenses physicians should be a wake-up call to other state agencies.

Arizona Ombudsman-Citizens' Aide Dennis Wells told members of the state Legislature's heath committees Wednesday that the Arizona Medical Board ignored laws and rules on physician licensing when it developed a fast-tracked licensing system. He says its former executive director thought she had the right to change rules at will despite laws governing how licenses are issued.

Wells says there's a chance other agencies have also ignored state laws they believed got in the way of their work and he says they should review their policies.

The ombudsman's report led the board to fire executive director Lisa Wynn last month.
