SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Republican Governors Association elected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as the chairman for the 2014 election year.

"All across America, Republican governors are doing what Washington can't: getting the big things done to move our country forward," Christie said, who added he would "work tirelessly over the next year to provide our governors and candidates with the resources they need to win."

There will be 36 governor's races across the U.S. in 2014, said RGA executive director Phil Cox.

"Republican governors welcome his leadership as Chairman of the RGA, and recognize that his record of accomplishment, broad political appeal, and tireless work ethic will be a tremendous asset in helping to win elections and advancing a message of growth, reform, and results," Cox said.

The Republican Governors Association raised $23.5 million through the first half of 2013 and enters the 2014 election cycle with more than $45 million cash on hand.
