It's a rare sight in the Valley but rain delays are for more than just baseball. The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Friday morning that all high school semi-finals would be postponed until Monday.
AIA Director Harold Slemmer says he made the decision to pull the plug on the games due to the wet weekend forecast.
"These field conditions are different in Arizona than maybe they are in other states," Slemmer said. "In other states, when the football season is over, nobody walks on the football field until spring."
Slemmer says other sports like soccer use the field over the winter and a football game on soft turf would be a setback for other sports sharing the field.
At Chaparral High, players were anxious to get on the field Friday evening for a rare game in the rain.
"Whenever you get a chance to play in rain and different kinds of elements, it's always exciting," Chaparral senior Jack Basham said.
According to the AIA, several games have already moved to different venues:
"Due to the weather conditions, field conditions and safety of the players and fans attending the games, all semi-final playoff games scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, are being moved to Monday night, the 25th at 6 p.m. All sites remain the same, unless otherwise noted here (updates may occur so check back throughout the day): D-IV #1 Show Low vs. #4 Blue Ridge at Round Valley H.S.; D-IV #2 Seton Catholic vs. #6 River Valley at Maricopa H.S.; D-V #1 Arizona Lutheran vs. #4 Round Valley at Scottsdale Christian Academy; #3 Yuma Catholic vs. #7 Thatcher at Poston Butte H.S."
All game times have been moved to Monday Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.
